what is happening with compliance deadlines?

The legislation announced in August 2024 has not yet been passed, which means the Water Services Act 2021 is still in effect.

If you own a drinking water supply that was operating before November 15, 2021, and is registered with the Ministry of Health, you must comply fully with the Act.

If your drinking water supply was not registered with the Ministry of Health, the following deadlines apply:

  • You have until November 2025 to register your supply with Taumata Arowai.

  • You must be fully compliant with the Act by November 2028.

Proposed changes will provide an additional three years (until 2028) to register unregistered supplies, with an extra two years (until 2030) to meet compliance requirements.

In the future, only supplies that serve 25 or more people (or serve community or commercial purposes if they serve less than 25 people) will need to be registered with Taumata Arowai.
