Why the added Scrutiny?

750,000 New Zealanders are drinking water that may not be safe.

This came to the public's attention after an outbreak of waterborne disease in Havelock North in 2016.  It is estimated there were 8320 cases of campylobacter, four people died and others were permanently disabled.

The situation could have been worse if a more deadly pathogen had been involved.  A Government inquiry found Havelock North to be one of many water supplies at risk of contamination.  Since that time, lead has been found in Dunedin's water supply, nitrate at concerning concentrations has been found to be increasing in many groundwater supplies, and many "boil water notices" have been issued around New Zealand.
